Cuevas de San Marcos Information
Cuevas de San Marcos was formerly known as Cuevas Altas, when it was part of Antequera town. It changed its name after its segregation from Antequera. But before that, a long time ago, it was known as Ciudad de Belda by the Romans. This is due to the cave that we can find on the northern side of the town in the Sierra del Camorro, which is a mountain near the village. Inside the cave, historians have determined that it was a Paleolithic site where prehistoric people would have lived. Looking at Romans times; There is also an open possibility of the existence of a roman castle and its forts, which were destroyed by Moors. There is a local museum where we can find all the details of the History of the town.
Today, inside the Cave of Belda we can find one of the largest colonies of bats in Europe. Another place to visit in this town is the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, which was built in the XVIII century and the Church of San Marcos el Evangelista. The church consists of three naves, separated by half-point arches, which support half-barrel vaults with arches “fajones” that run through the main nave reaching the elevated choir.

The Genil River and also the Pantano de Iznajar, one of the largest water reservoirs in Andalucía are very close too.
Fiestas
One of the biggest days in the town is on the 25th of April, when the Romería de San Marcos takes place. On this day, families have lunch together in the country, enjoying a day in the countryside with friends and family.
The town Feria takes place from the 11th to 15th of August. It has its origin from the cattle fair that took place on these days many centuries ago. During this fair they also celebrate the Día del Emigrante (Emigrant’s day). It is important to know that after the Civil War in Spain, lots of people went to work in the North of Spain, Cataluña mainly as well as in the South of France. This is why this day is celebrated today.
There are two other festivities which are typical in Cuevas de San Marcos: Jueves de Comadres, which takes place on the last Thursday before Carnival and Jueves de Compadres, which takes place on the Thursday closest to the 27th of January. These two days are celebrated on Thursdays. During Jueves de Compadres, men gather together and have lunch. On Jueves de Comadres, the women will be the ones gathering together and enjoying the day. The idea is to make friendships stronger for the New Year that has just begun.
