Monda information

Monda belongs to Malaga region in Andalucia. It has been a very old place of settlement of different civilizations throughout history.

Neolithic axes were found in the fields near the town and there is a Roman bridge over the Arroyo de La Teja and a Roman road in its proximity.

Some historians place here the famous battle of Munda between Julius Caesar and the Pompey brothers. What does seem certain is that with the entry of the Muslims to the peninsula, the lands where the town is located today were integrated into the defensive system of the Guadalhorce Valley in Malaga and why they built the castle of Monda.

After the conquest of Monda by the Christian troops, Muslims were allowed to stay in their properties. The coexistence of the inhabitants never became completely peaceful but was maintained until 1568 when there was a Moorish rebellion due to the injustices that they suffered, in which they burned many towns. After that, Muslims were expelled and their properties given to new inhabitants who came from the north of Castilla.

Fiestas

Día de la Sopa Mondeña: It takes place on the last Sunday in March - a traditional local soup is served to the village and visitors, of about 7,000 people. It is made from 120kg of stale bread, tomates de culo (dried tomatoes) and vegetables, sometimes with egg added too. The origins of the festival date back to the 19th century - the thick broth provided a nutritious meal for the miners. It is made in a one-piece carved wooden bowl.
