Montefrío Information
There are archaeological remains that proove the existence of different settlements in Montefrío since the Middle Neolithic, in 4500 BC, like the megalithic tombs that you can visit today.
Montefrío was part of the northwest frontier of the Kingdom of Granada. It was therefore an area of continuous fighting with Christians who were settled in Alcalá la Real. The town of Montefrío was protected by the castle of which today there only remains the walls.

The conquest of Montefrío by the Christian was attempted several times since Alfonso XI conquered Alcalá la Real in 1342. However, The conquest of Montefrío finally happened in 1483.
After the conquest of Montefrío and the rest of the region by los Reyes Católicos, there was a long period of peace and tranquility in which Christians settled. Economy was based on agriculture. The Church of La Villa was built upon the Arab castle, by Diego de Siloé. In addition, the hospital of San Juan de los Reyes and the Church of San Sebastian were built too as a sign of the change from Muslims to Christians.
