The town is a natural path between the region of Antequera and the Montes de Málaga, Iberians, Romans, Muslims and Christians have occupied these lands leaving traces of their existence for historians. Iberians founded the city of Osqva, the first village placed in this location, which later would be one of the Roman villas of the province of Malaga cited by historians Tito Livio and Plinio in their works. After the fall of the Roman Empire, there is no documentation during several centuries. Historians assume that people living here, went to Antakira (now Antequera) looking for protection.
During the Al-Andalus era, there was a castle sited in the town, the castle of Xébar. It was built to control the crossing from the centre of Al-Andalus to the coast. It was destroyed and rebuilt twice before the conquest of Granada by Fernando el Católico. After that, the castle was abandoned by the Arabs. On the XVIII the town recovered its importance with the construction of the Camino Real, a road from Málaga to Madrid.
Fiestas
Festival de Verdiales. It is a festival celebrated in August when lots of “pandas de verdiales” meet in Villanueva de la Concepción, groups of people dressed up in typical clothes with the singing and dancing of verdiales. Verdiales is a traditional way of singing from the province of Málaga. It can be considered a variety of fandango, and in its roots you can find Moorish connotations. Such was the acceptance of this popular way of singing that it has been passed from generation to generation until today. We can find three styles: Almogía Style, Montes Style and Comares Style. Among the instruments present in the verdiales you will find the violin, the guitar, the tambourines and the cymbals.
Feria de Agosto. It is a fair celebrated around the 15th of August, the festivity of the Asunción de María. During 5 or 6 days there are games and competitions in the town as the “chocolatada”, karaoke, horse racing, etc. During evenings there are concerts in the town square.
